  • National Climate League

The Community Climate Hub network taps into its collective power for action through the National Climate League (NCL) municipal benchmarking initiative. Comparing city progress allows us to identify and scale best practices quickly across similar municipalities.

    What is it?

The National Climate League (NCL) is a yearly project of Climate Reality Project Canada (CRPC).

We bring volunteers across the country together to collect open data on a set of sustainability indicators

relating to Canadian municipalities--things like kilometers of bike lanes, transit ridership, waste diversion rates, housing affordability, climate targets and more! CRPC and volunteers then compile the data and visualize it into its Standings: a document that shines light on best practices and inspiring solutions being implemented across Canada.

Measuring yearly changes in the NCL indicators allows the public to track and compare municipalities’ successes, which ultimately supports the advocacy that is required for change to happen. Submitted data is always accessible in our open database Stat Tracker!

    Why participate?

    • Learn more about the state of climate action and sustainability (and how those are measured) in your city and beyond through hands-on research.
    • Build relationships with your councilors and city officials.
    • Connect with others in your city and region, and across the country who are working on climate and sustainability initiatives.
    • Be part of a national project that will make change happen! The NCL Standings are meant to be an advocacy tool that can be used to encourage cities to step up their sustainability game. The project also draws attention to important issues of data availability, transparency, and consistency.
    • Contribute to a project that not only signals to decision makers what is important.(#MeasureWhatMatters), enhances transparency and decisionmaker accountability, and results in the annual publication of a document - the Standings - that serves as an excellent lobbying tool for individuals or Hubs to use when talking to their decisionmakers about local climate action.

    How to get involved

Visit the NCL homepage (also linked below) where you can learn more about the initiative, read all the databases, and find a social media toolkit you can use to advocate your local council! Anyone, especially Hub members, are welcome to participate in the National Climate League. Getting involved will empower you to better advocate for change in your city, and create some friendly competition to improve cities across the country and quality of life for all. It will also give you a chance to learn how to collect public data, visualize data, and contribute to a national report, all while meeting great like minded people along the way.

  • Download the National Climate League Standings

Citizen-led and data-driven, the National Climate League enables volunteers to gather data on sixteen carefully chosen primary indicators that reflect a better quality of life for everyday Canadians living in municipalities. These Standings then function as both a benchmarking and a lobbying tool comparing how Canadian municipalities fare across these sustainability indicators.
